What is AN (Access Node)?

An Access Node is a point where user traffic enters and exits a communication network. Its functions include protocol conversion and code conversion. A multi-service access node (MSAN), also known as a multi-service access gateway, is typically installed in a telephone exchange that connects telephone lines to the core network in telecommunications. In cellular communications, switching points and databases such as base station controller, home location register, Gateway GPRS support node, and serving GPRS support node are some examples of nodes.
